Software and Other Issues
PhotoStory 3 - I am trying to get a PhotoStory 3 WMV movie to play on a Mac and can only get audio and no video. How do I get the movie to play on my Mac so I can see the pictures?

This is an issue with PhotoStory 3 and how it exports the movie. PhotoStory 3 puts an Image codec on the movie file that is compatible with Windows, and is not compatible with Apple OSX (including version 10.6). It is not known if there will ever be a fix for this issue for Apple computers.

To make the PhotoStory 3 video work on all computers (including Apples), there are a couple options.

1). Go to http://www.zamzar.com/ and convert the movie to a different format.

- STEP 1 - Browse for the movie file on your computer.

- STEP 2 - Choose the format you want to convert movie to.

Compatible Formats: AVI, FLV, M4V, MPG, WMV.

- STEP 3 - Enter your email address in the box. They will email you the converted movie.

- STEP 4 - Click Convert button.

2). On the EVSC Netbook or other Windows computer, open the free program Windows Movie Maker and export the movie in a compatible WMV format.

(To Open WMM on netbook, go to Start - My Computer - Local Disk (C:) - Program Files - Movie Maker)

Windows Movie Maker - (Version 2.1)

- Go to File -> Import into Collections...

- Find the PhotoStory WMV movie on your computer and then click IMPORT.

- Drag the movie clips to the storyboard below. Make sure you keep the files in order.

- To publish the movie, go to "Save Movie File..."

From the Save Movie Wizard

- Choose "My Computer" from the choices in the window and click Next.

- 1). Enter a file name. 2). Choose the place where to save the movie. Click Next.

- Keep the default settings seen on the screen. Click Next.

- Click Finish after Movie Maker has finished saving the movie. [Option to view movie is available from this screen]

Apple Users Need Flip4Mac Software to Play WMV Files

To download Flip4Mac, go to our Software Support page and look under Computer "Must Haves" for Mac.

Mousepad - The mousepad is really sensitive. Is there a way I can either turn it off or adjust the sensitivity?
If you turn off the touchpad, you will either need to use an external mouse or the keyboard to navigate. It can be very cumbersome navigating using the keyboard. If you have to choose a method, we recommend adjusting the sensitivity.

1). To get to the Touchpad settings, click on the Touchpad system icon located in the bottom right part of your screen.

If you don't have the Touchpad icon showing, it may not be installed on your netbook. If you're a teacher, you can download and install the program by going to the Dell Support page located at this Download Link. If you get an onscreen prompt about how to download, choose "Download via your Internet Browser." The Dell Driver Download Manager did not play nice when we tried downloading the driver.

If the install process does not begin or finish, you may need to go to a folder on the Hard Drive to initiate the installation. Local Disk (C:) -> dell -> drivers -> R262168 and click on the Setup file.

2). Click on "Touchpad Settings" from the menu.

3). Adjust the sensitivity to your liking.

4). Click "Apply" to apply the change to try it out. Click "OK" to finalize the change.

Wireless Access
My wireless network is set to the GUEST network and I can't change it to WSN. What do I need to do to get my netbook to connect to the WSN network?

If your netbook is set to the GUEST network, you (or the student it belongs to) will need to take the netbook to either the eLearning Coach or EVSC Tech person in your building to have them reset the network settings.

At school, your netbook should automatically join WSN, an internal network. Netbook users should NEVER choose the Guest network, as this will NOT allow you to access the web, synchronize and backup your netbook, and gain access to your network storage.

Can my netbook connect to Internet providers other than the EVSC?

The netbooks should be able to join wired and wireless networks provided you know the password. Please consult your internet provider for further assistance.

Shutting Down
What is the proper way of shutting down the netbooks everyday?
To shut down your netbook at the end of the school day, follow these important steps.

1). Click on the Start button in the bottom left of your screen. Windows XP Start Button

2). Click the "Shut Down" button. Microsoft Windows XP Turn Off Computer

MUST READ!

3).Be sure to leave the lid open on the netbook as it shuts down. If you prematurely close the lid before it fully shuts down, the netbook may not fully syncronize your data to the server and thus leaving you vulnerable to data loss.

Why is it important that we shut down our computers every day before leaving school?

Be sure that you do a full shut down of your computer down everyday before leaving school. By doing so, your data will be backed up to the server and the data will be retrievable in the event your netbook suffers from hardware failure.

When you use the netbook at home, be sure to do a full shut down before returning to school. When you get to school, start your netbook and login to the network. Doing this will sync your data that you worked on that evening and will ensure that the new data is backed up.

Shutting the lid on the laptop puts the netbook in hibernation mode and does not perform the same function as shut down.

Passwords
How do students change their login password?

Students who wish to reset the password may do so upon having successfully logged in. Once you can see the Start menu, press (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and then click "Change a Password." Note that doing so will also change your ANGEL password, but it may take a day before ANGEL changes.
