How It All Started

First, a little history of our beginnings…

For many years before the beginning of our 1:1 initiative, the EVSC focused on effective learning with technology.  Specifically, in 2000, the EVSC applied and received a three-year grant that allowed us to hire classroom teachers to focus on integrating curriculum and technology.  That was the beginning of the ICATS, then known as Integrating Curriculum And Technology Specialists.

We hired 6 of our teachers that had a proven record and interest in maximizing learning with technology.  We selected two from each grade level of schools we had at the time: 2 from Elementary, 2 from Middle School and 2 from High School.  They worked on multiple initiatives to help teachers maximize the use of technology for learning. When the EVSC decided to implement 1:1, we did so for all grades at the high school level and the ICATS were a vital key to prepare the staff.  We had Board approval on June 8th and we were able to hold our first eRevolution Conference on July 10, 2009 for all high school teachers.  Those that attended received the device first and the conference focused on effective implementation of the device within the classroom.   We also hired eLearning Coaches with one at each high school.  At the beginning of the school year we implemented student tech teams which were students that illustrated very adept skills with technology.  The student tech teams advised us on effective practices and helped us to debug many of the problem areas we experienced.  A student portal was developed and that was the main page for all the student netbooks.  Communication with the students and their acceptable use was modeled and encouraged through the student portal. The eRevolution Conference has continued and grown each year to the point that it is now a regional conference that serves over 900 educators from across the state and region.  We have always invited administrators to participate and in 2013 we will have a dedicated administrator strand during the first full day of our conference. For the Fall of 2011, we decided to roll-out 1:1 for grades 6-8 and also hired an eLearning Coach at each of the schools for the first year implementation.   We also decided to rename the ICATS but keep the acronym.  They are now known as Innovation, Curriculum and Technology Specialists.

Our team consists of 4 ICATS and 7 eLearning Coaches. The ICATS support the district as a whole, delivering professional development virtually through the website and webinars and visiting schools.  The 7 eLearning Coaches are assigned to different buildings they support, plus contribute to the resources found on this website.
