How many people can share a spreadsheet, document, presentation,… in Google Drive?

This post originally posted on March 18, 2013.  For the most up-to-date information on sharing in Google Drive, please consult the Share files from Google Drive page.

Google makes collaborating and sharing a document in Google Drive VERY EASY!

When editing a Google document, in the top right corner there is a Share button.  In the EVSC, you can easily search all the staff and student names in our network and select the names you want to share a document.  There are also options to limit access to editing and viewing.

Current Limitations of Google Drive Document Sharing

  • 50 people can edit at the same time.
  • 250 people can view at the same time.
  • If the document is published to the web, viewership is limitless.*
* As long as no restrictions to limit access have been placed on the document.

The first thing you need to do is determine what’s causing the delay. If you notice the delay decreases when fewer people are editing, then you will know it’s the people that are the cause. Tell your editors that when they are finished editing the Sheet to close the tab with the Sheet so there are less users accessing the information. Maybe that can speed it up. If the delay is still present when few are present in the sheet, then it could be your Internet provider. I don’t notice a slowness when I’m in Sheets, but I also have access to high-speed Internet. Hope you’re able to get it resolved.
