Welcome to the 2013 ICATS 30 Day eLearning Challenge!

Well, another year has jumped out and handed us a new challenge!  We have been preparing our thoughts and we have come up with a great list of resources for you in this year’s ICATS 30 Day Challenge! We are also happy to include our challenge into our ongoing connected educator blogs for the month of October!  Additionally, we are proud to announce a great new feature to this year’s challenge… we are able to host it diectly on our evscicats.com website!  This will mean that all of our posts are archived directly on the site for easy searchable access in the future!

For our past challenges, all of the posts and resources are available at icats30daychallenge.blogspot.com – (Website is no longer available) for you to access and review if you would like.  We have had an overwhelming response to our challenge with thousands of people still accessing it each month throughout the year.  This is no doubt a testament to how dedicated teachers are to improving their craft in the classroom!

The first year we were able to award an iPad to teacher Melissa Mayer (Vogel Elementary School, EVSC).  Last year we awarded an iPad to teacher Aaron Sisson (Glenwood Leadership Academy, EVSC) and Debbie Wolinsky (Indianapolis Public Schools) received an eRevolution Conference prize package of 4 registrations and 2-nights hotel stay during the conference ($600 value).

Well, the great news keeps on keepin’ on!  In addition to handing out certificates for 10 Professional Growth Plan (PGP) hours to each challenger that completes the challenge, we are going to double the prizes awarded this year!!!  We will randomly select, via Fruit Machine2 EVSC teachers and 2 non-EVSC teachers who complete the entire challenge to receive additional recognition for their dedication to learning.

Additional recognition:

EVSC Employee:

1 – A New Google Chromebook, plus free registration to the 2014 eRevolution Regional eLearning Conference, July 9-10, 2014 at North High School, Evansville Indiana ($275 value)

1 – Free registration to the first ever Indiana Google Summit February 15-16, 2014 at Harrison High School, Evansville Indiana ($249 value)

Non-EVSC Employee:

1 – eRevolution Regional eLearning Conference prize package including registration for 4 to the eRevolution Conference and 2 hotel rooms for the nights of July 8-9, 2014 ($600 value)

1 – Free registration to the first ever Indiana Google Summit February 15-16, 2014 at Harrison High School, Evansville Indiana ($249 value)

Completing the Challenge! (The Rules)

Here’s how the challenge works…..  Each of the next 30 days that the EVSC is in session we will introduce a new resource and some general information about how to get started with it.  We will also provide you with additional similar tools that may be available.   Resources will vary from web tools to mobile apps, and may include a few free downloads, but we are committed to helping provide access to free resources.  All of the primary tools we investigate with you are free or have a free option.

Your challenge is to actively participate in the discussion around each of the topics.  Active participation means that you will contribute at least one new idea, suggestion or relevant resource to each blog post.  Cordial comments such as “I like that one”, “I agree with Kris”, or “This doesn’t pertain to my classes, but I’ll look at it” are not going to receive credit for the challenge.  All decisions regarding “active participation” will be made jointly by the ICATS.  For active participants, we will encourage you to verify completion of all posts prior to the final date of the challenge through email to [email protected].  The last challenge will be posted on December 11th, 2013.  You will have until midnight on December 15, 2013 to complete any remaining challenges.  Drawings will be held, via Fruit Machine, from all eligible participants on Monday December 16 and prizes will be awarded that afternoon.  Certificates for completion including PGP hours will be sent via email no later than December 20, 2013.

You do not have to complete the challenge by the end of each day to stay eligible for completing the challenge.  However, all your challenge comments need to be complete before midnight on December 15, 2013.

If you are an EVSC employee, you can comment to our posts by simply logging in to the ICATS site with your email username and password.

The Challenge Will Begin on Monday October 28, 2013!

Good Luck and Enjoy the Challenge!

If you have any questions please post them below in the comments section!

  1. Well, I may not have the time to commit to this challenge all year with basketball practices coming up, but I will give it a try!

    • No Problem! We love collaborating! Please do share, we have lot’s of great websites and apps that we are going to be looking at. Additionally each challenge can be completed at anytime throughout the course of the event as long as it is completed before midnight on December 15th. Please take a look at the last two years of challenges @ http://icats30daychallenge.blogspot.com/

  2. Boy! It took me a long time to figure out some of this because I didn’t click on Leave a Reply! I have created my gravatar and am anxious to see it somewhere. I’ve been teaching for 25 years and still like to try new things.

  3. I have been invited by Pam Lindsey to join this challenge. I would like to join and try this out. I am from out of district.

  4. So if I understand it correctly, all I have to do is comment to get started? I am not an EVSC employee but would like to participate.

    • That is correct, Just add to the conversation each day and be an active participant,…. If you get behind, it is OK, just make sure that all of your comments are completed by midnight December 15th.

      Welcome and enjoy!

  5. Very excited to participate again this year! This was one of the things that really got me more interested in Technology in the classroom and there are always some really great ideas and web applications that have changed the way I teach! Thanks for doing it again!

    • All are welcome to participate. EVSC refers to the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation to which the ICATS are employed. We have to separate EVSC teachers and employees from non-EVSC employees for the prizes only. We have incentives for both, but Funding sources limits what we can give away to people not employed here.

Again, all are welcome and no sign-up is required. Thanks!

  6. If you haven’t participated before- this is one of the best PD ideas. I highly recommend it. The last 2 years I have made an old fashioned list of things I want to try from it. Look back at other years from the link- it’s some good info for your teacher tool box.

    • Gigi,
Great! Our first challenge post will begin on Monday and continue each weekday. Just as you have done here, place your comments in this area for each post and that’s it. We’ll keep track of your comments and include all in the challenge that participate.
