Middle School math teachers who teach an Algebra I course need to be aware that starting the 2011-12 school year, ALL Algebra I courses in the RDS Gradebook need to have their “Semester Total” sections in the Course Setup configured in the same way as high school teachers using Calculation instead of Total Points.

1). Click View/Edit from the drop down menu and then click Course Setup.

2). Select Grade Period Total – This section defines the calculation method for Grade Period grades.

1). Grade Scale – The grade scale that will be used for this Grade Period. Grade scales are defined in the Grade Scales window (View/Edit->Grade Scales).

2A). Use Total Points… – Select this option to calculate the Grade Period grade using the total points for all assignments designated “For Grade.” This is a straight average using raw scores.

2B). Use this Calculation… – Select this option to calculate the Grade Period grade using a formula (a weighted average). The categories that appear here are defined in the Assignment Categories window (View/Edit->Assignment Categories). Click a number in the “% of Grade” column to change the weighting for an assignment category. Note that the total percentage for all categories must equal 100%. If a student has not completed assignments in a category, the calculation will ignore that category.

Treat all Grade Periods as one Grade Period – Select this option to calculate the Grade Period grade based on a cumulative total of all Grade Periods. For example, Grade Period 1 grades would be based on assignments from Grade Period 1; Grade Period 2 grades would be based on assignments from Grade Periods 1 and 2; Grade Period 3 grades would be based on assignments from Grade Periods 1, 2, and 3.

Calculate (Behavior) grade using total from category -Select a category from this drop down box in order to automatically calculate the Behavior grade using the total points for the category. In this way, multiple assignments can be used to calculate the Behavior grade. Note that in some cases, the “Behavior” grade has a different title, such as “6-Week Exam.” If this option is used, in most cases the selected category should not be used as part of Grade Period Total calculation.

3). Select Semester Total – This section defines the calculation method for Semester grades.

1). Grade Scale – The grade scale that will be used for this Semester. Grade scales are defined in the Grade Scales window (View/Edit -> Grade Scales).

2). Use this Calculation… – Select this option to calculate the Semester grade using a formula (a weighted average). This formula consists of Grade Period grades and an optional Final Exam. Click a number in the “% of Grade” column to change the weighting for a Grade Period or the Final Exam. Note that the total percentage for all items must equal 100%. If a student has not completed assignments in a Grade Period, the calculation will ignore that Grade Period; in the same way, if a student has not completed a Final Exam, the calculation will ignore the Final Exam.

6-Week Schools Percents

GP1 – 26.6%

GP2 – 26.7%

GP3 – 26.7%

FE – 20%

9-Week Schools Percents

GP1 – 40%

GP2 – 40%

FE – 20%

4). Save for All Grade Periods/Semesters (All Courses) – Select to copy the Grade Period Total and Semester Total settings to all your courses/grading periods/semesters.

Different Grading Scales:

Some teachers may want to apply a certain grading scale to one class and not to others. To do this, select that class from the Courses drop down menu, repeat the above steps and then save using Save for All Grade Periods/Semesters (This Course ONLY).

You’re finished setting up your courses. Have a great school year!
